The Millstone Township Fire Company has been selected to receive the William H. Spurgeon III award. This award is presented by the Monmouth County Boy Scouts of America to individuals or organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program.Explorer Post 321 which exists within the Millstone Township Fire Company currently has 12 active members and was established in 2003. Explorer Post 321 makes a difference in the lives of the youth and adult leaders helps Monmouth County deliver a quality experience to thousands of youth families leaders.Since the inception of this program 7 Explorers went on to be active firefighters within the Millstone Township Fire Company.The fire company will recieve the award at an upcoming Monmouth Council Annual Recognitition Dinner which will be held on Thursday June 19th 2008 at the the Buttonwood Manor in Matawan NJ.
On Monday May 14th at 0858 Millstone Twp EMS was dispatched to 308 Route 537 in front of the YMCA day camp for a pole down on a vehicle. On duty firefighters hearing this dispatch immediately responded with Engine 3274 South and Utility 3286 equipped with Rescue Tools due to Rescue 3285 being out of service. Lt South requested that the department be dispatched to the call. Engine 3274 arrived to find a minivan that had sheered off a telephone pole and struck a tree with two occupants trapped. Firefighters initiated patient care stabilized the vehicle and placed the Rescue tools in service performing a total side removal on both the drivers and passenger side. After this was completed the crew assisted EMS with patient removal and packaging. Shortly after returning from the 537 accident the department was dispatched to 286 Millstone Road for a car vs pole. Engine 3274 and Utility 3286 again arrived to find a van that had also sheered off a telephone and went through a fence ending up in a horse pasture. After a quick patient assessment the decision was made to stabilize the vehicle and remove the drivers door. Also crews removed a section of the horse fence to provide better access to the scene. After the drivers door was removed crews assisted EMS with removal and packaging. Units cleared up and handled two calls for wires down before 1130
On February 24th at 0329 Millstone Fire was dispatched to Prodelin Way and Huneke Way for a car vs tree. Deputy Chief Reed 3267 arrived and confirmed a single vehicle into some trees with the driver self extricated. Rescue 3285 and Engine 3274 arrived and took care of securing the vehicle and providing scene lighting. Units remained on scene until the vehicle was removed. The driver was transported to Centrastate Medical Center by EMS.Later in the morning at 0816 the Station was again alerted for a car vs tree this time on Route 33 in the area of Millstone Rd. Deputy Chief Reed 3267 and Engine 3274South arrived to find a car vs trees on the Westbound side of the highway with heavy front end damage. The driver had been removed by bystanders prior to FD arrival. The Engine crew handled patient care and packaging until EMS arrived as well as securing the vehicles battery. Rescue 3285 arrived and assisted the Engine crew. Units remained on scene until the vehicle was removed. The driver was transported to Centrastate Medical Center by EMS.
At 2049 Millstone Fire and EMS were dispatched to 20 Brookside Road for a possible structure fire. Due to the earlier snow storm members were at the firehouse for a snow stand by and had an immediate response. Initial responding units were Tanker 32-96 and Engine 32-74 with Assistant Chief John Fiore 32-68. While enroute State Police confirmed a working structure. Upon arrival 32-68 confirmed a 2 story residential fully involved with fire showing from sides A B and D. 32-74 laid a supply line in from the driveway and led off with a 2 12 due to the heavy volume of fire to side D. While enroute Deputy Chief Ed Reed 32-67requested a full box alarm and a recall of all available manpower. Chief Reed arrived and assumed command. While the 2 12 was getting into operation a 2nd 1 34 hand line was strecthed to the A side. As additional manpower and mutual aid units were arriving 3 additional 1 34 hand lines were pulled all working under an exterior operation. After 75 minutes of heavy fire the dwelling began to darken. Roof operations soon began on the BC corner of the structure where heavy fire was still showing. Hand lines quickly knocked down this area of fire. Due to the amount of fire extensive overhaul was needed keeping manpower on scene for several more hours. At approximately 130AM all 32-1 units were clear from the scene with extensive clean up needed. The Millstone Ladies Auxiliary provided rehab at the scene and the new Dunkin Donuts located on Rt. 537 by Great Adventure donated coffee and donuts. At 0919 Millstone Fire and EMS units were dispatched to Millstone Rd and Sweetmans Lane for a MVA Car vs Pole. Engine 3274 South and Rescue 3285 responded immeaditely. The Engine and Rescue arrived to find a station wagon into some trees with heavy front end damage and the driver still inside. A FirefighterEMT entered the vehicle began a assessment of the driver. After a brief assessment the decision was made to remove drivers side doors and the B post. The crew stablized the vehicle and placed the rescue tools inservice. The patient was removed at 0931 and turned over to arriving EMS units.
On February 6th at 1256 the Millstone Twp Fire Department was dispatched to Interstate 195 westbound MM 16 for a reported vehicle fire. Chief J.Carbin 3266 arrived to find a well involved car fire with extension to nearby brush at MM 15.8. Engine 3274 arrived close behind the Chief and led off with an 1.75 handline and quickly knocked the fire down. Tanker 3295 arrived and supplied 3274. Crews remained on scene a short while overhauling the vehicle.
On February 4th at 1309 the Millstone Twp Fire Department was dispatched to Route 537 in front of McDonalds for an MVA with a fluid spill. On duty firefighters had heard Jackson getting sent to the same location a minute prior for an accident with entrapment and were already boarding the Engine when the tones dropped. Engine 3276 South arrived to find Jackson Engine 5417 on scene with a 4 vehicle accident on the Jackson side. Rescue 3285 was also enroute driver only. Engine 3276 took up a blocking position at the rear of the scene and the crew began assisting Jackson Firefighters and MONOC BLS with treating patients. A total of 3 injuries were found out of 7 people involved. After assessing the driver of vehicle 3 the decision was made to place the tools from Resce 3285 into service to remove the drivers side of the vehicle. The Engine crew placed the Rescues tools in service and removed both drivers side doors. The patient was turned over to Jackson EMS for transport. Millstone EMS and Cassville Fire Department Jackson were also on scene.
On January 29th at 1929 Millstone Fire and EMS units were dispatched to the area of 843 Perrineville Rd for a car versus tree with entrapment. Due to volunteer and career firefighters being at the station for an appartaus committee meeting Engine 3274 responded quickly. Rescue 3285 responded a few minutes later. Upon arrival of Chief Carbin 3266 he found an SUV into a tree with the female driver entrapped. Crews stablized the vehicle and went into service performing a door pop with the Holmatro Spreader. The patient was extricated and turned over to EMS for transport to the hospital.On January 31st at 0806 Manalapan and Englishtown Fire and EMS units were dispatched to Sweetmans Lane and Lambs Lane for a motor vehicle accident. Addtional information was received reporting an occupant trapped in one of the vehicles. Due to Manalapans Rescue Truck being out of service for repairs Chief Marinni 26-2-66 requested Rescue 3285 to respond. Millstone Fire was dispatched at 0811 with Rescue 3285 making the response under command of B-Platoon Lt.South. Rescue 3285 arrived at 0819 and found a female driver entrapped in her car following a collision with a box truck. The rescue crew went into service stablizing the car and removing both drivers side doors and the B post. The patient was removed and turned over to Manalapan EMS for transport to Jersey Shore Trauma Center. Rescue 3285 cleared at 0829Later that night Millstone Fire and EMS units were dispatched to Rising Sun Tavern Rd and Agress Rd for a motor vehicle accident with possible entrapment at 2019 hours. Chief Carbin 3266 arrived to find one car into the woods with the driver entrapped. Due to the patients condition a Medevac was requested. Rescue 3285 and Engine 3274 arrived and crews went in service popping the passenger side door allowing for a rapid extrication. An Engine from Allentown Sta 82-1 was requested to set-up a landing zone behind the Clarksburg Inn. After the patient was extricated he was transported to the landing zone by EMS. NorthStar Medevac transported the patient to Jersey Shore Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead later that evening.
